-- PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --

March 24 2009

A phase of repression descended on Malaysia as Najib Razak seizes control of the reins of power, even before officially taking over as Prime Minister, and unleashes his brutality and violence on the people.

Last night, a rally of about 10,000 people from all races was mercilessly attacked by the police with tear gas and acid-laced water cannon minutes after I began my speech in Bukit Selambau. Scores of people were arrested including my chief of staff, MPs, and senior aides to the Chief Minister of Kedah.

To justify their iron hand tactics and blatant violation of the people’s fundamental liberties, the police have claimed that the rally was illegal. These are baseless claims as the event took place on private property and adhered to the rules.

Last night’s show of brute force is but the latest in a series of harsh and dictatorial action by the government under Najib against the people. Also yesterday Suara Keadilan and Harakah were banned by the Home Ministry without any justification. These events only too starkly remind us of the cruel and authoritarian style of leadership under which Malaysians suffered for many years. The police force has become a band of marauders.

The press is muzzled and those who speak the truth about the abuses carried out by the ruling clique are arrested, beaten and bullied.

Zaid likely to join PKR, analysts say
Posted by admin

(The Edge) Despite the fact that he has all but thrown his weight behind the Opposition, former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim has thus far been coy about joining any Pakatan Rakyat (PR) party.

Yesterday, he sparked a flurry of speculation about this matter when he indicated he was keen to return to active politics.

Most analysts believe it’s just a question of when but the party in question is not really in doubt. Most likely it will be PKR, they say.

And it would be for the best for Pakatan Rakyat if he does. Although all three parties, PKR, DAP and PAS are considered more or less equals in the coalition, realpolitik dictates that the leader of PR has to come from PKR for the simple reason that neither a DAP or PAS leader would be considered acceptable to the broader public.

DAP is seen as too non-Malay though it’s nominally multi-racial while PAS is seen as too Islamic, although it has progressive and modernist elements within its ranks.

Next Malaysian PM linked to murder

By Jarius Bondoc

Upon winning unopposed in end-March as head of his ruling UMNO party, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak will become the new PM. Charges of sleaze have stained his political rise. Now a report in French paper Liberation, of ties to a murdered Mongolian model, threatens his career. Reprinted in two parts is the English version, “The Altantuya Case: How and Why She Was Killed”, with permission from author Arnaud Dubus. Writing from Kuala Lumpur, Ulan Bator and Paris, Dubus presents a gripping investigative account:

Things turned dramatic Oct. 2006. Altantuya Sharibu got word that the “commission” from French-Spanish company Armaris had arrived at a Malaysian bank account. It had been paid to Perimekar, a company owned by Abdul Razak Baginda, intermediary of deputy PM and defense minister Najib Razak. Altantuya rushed to Kuala Lumpur to claim her share of the “commission” from Baginda; she said she was entitled to $500,000. Baginda and Altantuya had broken up prior to this.

A jealous Rosmah Mansor, the feared businesswoman-wife of Najib Razak, objected to any payment to Altantuya.

Don't be naive, race-based politics here to stay

Hammurabi

Much has transpired since the March 8, 2008 political tsunami and much has been said of what is and what is to come. The question is, have we really done away with race-based governance and evolved into a people who have embraced a more ecumenical brand of politics?

Many rational Malaysians may agree that race-based politics is not really the issue here as ultimately we want a government that is just, fair, and upright, regardless of the brand of politics that happens to be the order of the day.

Has Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of Pakatan Rakyat satisfactorily addressed certain pressing issues such as the Bar Council's forum on conversion or something less highlighted such as the Lina Joy saga and the Subshini/Revathi cases? What is his stand on such matters?

It is no surprise that PR has yet or will not respond to such cases or take any stand so as to avoid upsetting the various factions that make up the opposition coalition who have inherently diametrically varying interests.

In short, how is PR different from the BN that we revile?

Anwar to know Mar 5 where his sodomy trial will be

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has to wait until Mar 5 to know if his sodomy trial will be retained in the Sessions Court or transferred to the High Court.

High Court judge Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah will decide then on the prosecution's application for a revision to quash the Sessions Court's decision to retain the trial in the Sessions Court.

Justice Mohamad Zabidin set the date after hearing submissions from deputy public prosecutor Datuk Mohamed Yusof Zainal Abiden, who led the prosecution team, and Anwar's lead counsel, Sulaiman Abdullah.

The prosecution filed for a revision as well as an appeal on Nov 7 last year against the Sessions Court's dismissal of the prosecution's application to transfer the case to the High Court after ruling that the transfer certificate, signed by Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, was invalid.

Anwar rallies the troops amidst setbacks

Having secured victory at the polls, a political mandate must be sustained by good leadership. And once obtained, political momentum can nevertheless dissipate quickly from the lack of direction.

These two slivers of cautionary wisdom were driven home by PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim in a clarion call to arms made to about 200 of the party’s parliamentarians, state assemblypersons and division leaders from throughout the country at a special meeting in Shah Alam today.

Interview with Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan

Even before the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to replace the Anti-Corruption Agency was launched last week, Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan has come under fire. In an interview with Sunday Star, he dismisses accusations of double standards that have been levelled at the MACC of late, and says the Commission’s actions will prove its consistency. He also appeals to the public to give the MACC a chance.

Anwar Regrets Detention Of Kapar MP

SHAH ALAM, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regrets the detention of Kapar member of parliament (MP) S.Manikavasagam and 17 supporters of Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee P.Uthayakumar at an illegal rally at Brickfields police headquarters today.

He said police should not have prevented the supporters from handing a report that diabetic Uthayakumar was not given proper treatment.

"I protest. People who lodged police reports against Karpal Singh escape while those who defended their friends at Kamunting are detained.

"I've seen Umno's demonstration in Penang. They controlled the entire area but nobody was even questioned," he said at a "peoples' aspiration address" here today.

Anwar also claimed that the toll rates would be increased after the by-elections at Bukit Gantang (Perak), Bukit Selambau (Kedah) and Batang Ai (Sarawak).

The Cabinet has decided to postpone indefinitely the toll increase for five expressways that was supposed to take effect on Sunday.

Who is najib Altantuya to say Perak Asembly sitting cannot be held?

By SK English Team

Less than 24 hours after Perak Speaker V Sivakumar called an emergency sitting of the legislative assembly, Deputy Premier Najib Abdul Razak has begun giving the runaround in a bid to cling to power in a state where his name is no longer a welcomed word.

“It cannot be held because there has been a court action,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama. “Whatever it is, we have to wait for the decision of the court first. We have to first establish the status of the Perak government in terms of the constitution.”

The scandal-plagued Najib, who is also incoming Umno president, was referring to a court case filed against BN Menteri Besar Zambry Kadir by Pakatan Rakyat MB Nizar Jamaluddin.
